This was taken on a bridge connecting Goat Island to Three Sisters Island over Niagara river. The river water was rushing on this bright sunny day. The branch looked delicate enough to be swept away any moment, but it was hanging in there..
This thought of shooting a branch with water as background is really nice.
The whole intent of placing the subject in the intersection is to pull the viewer's immediate attention and give a pleasing effect. So, the subject should be standing out from the rest of the objects and the background. This can be achieved by using a background which differs from the subject in terms of color, contrast, texture and/or sharpness etc.
But in this case, to me the branch does not seem to stand out separately and eyecatching. The light does not seem to have helped a lot.
In short, the focus was laid on placing the subject in the intersection and not making the subject prominent.
Hope you agree with my thoughts. Any corrections what i said are most welcome.
I do agree that focus was laid on placement of the subject. So, keeping in mind your comment what would have been the best way to compose this picture, given the story I'm trying to convey and given that it was mid-day..
A practical answer would be, I would not even shoot with a bad (harsh) light. But here, you did not want to miss the scene and want to somehow capture the story.
So, some more possible solutions as far as I know are: 1. Try to find a different view point to avoid the glare from the water 2. Try to use a polarizer filter to reduce the glare from the water 3. Try some post-processing to enhance the presence of the leaves and make in more prominent than the rest of the elements of the image 4. Try to zoom-in a little more(i am not sure if there was room to zoom further) to reduce water area in the image. If this is the closest zoom, then crop the original image a little closer to avoid the white waves as much as possible.
I tried out some post-processing on your image. That helped a bit in enhancing the contrast and color. But still, I could not make the leaves and branch more prominent with the available image.
There are lot of situations where the objects seem interesting but light doesn't favor. In my opinion this is one of that kind.
